When bringing the new material to the band, very little was said about the music.- After all I had this lineup in mind whilst composing the pieces. The sixth sense of Asaf in particular was invaluable in getting these pieces feeling good in a very short space of time. It’s hard to think of Asaf as a drummer in regular terms - because he plays the whole kit so musically. Asaf has earned a reputation as a key performer in the uk and around Europe. Both as an accompanist or bandleader,. Stylistically I was looking for a bassist that would rise to the challenge of new music without any preconceived jazz history limitations. The challenge to play in a piano trio setting -with its colourful history – but to explore new territory that’s actually relevant for me has always been my goal. In fact the new tunes were about developing new textures and Yuri was perfect for this role. Moscow born Yuri Goloubev excelled at an early age in classical music. He Received his Master’s Degree in double bass as a soloist and chamber music performer from Moscow Conservatory in 1995.

Taking the core rhythms from Brazil but also Cuba, Dominican Republic, the trio plays many of the precise rhythms from these rich sources. From Samba's and Rumbas, to Salsa's and Afro-Cuban the trio combines the more familar repertoire of Puente, Palmieri, Jobin with more obscure composers Mendez, and Ruben Bladez. However the bands strength and originality come from their approach to more familiar American Songbook classics - and to revitalize these standards through this colourful, happy and rhythmic lens shows how versatile the piano trio format is.

This is an ongoing passion rather the a project! I got into jazz through hearing the early virtuos Errol Garner and Art Tatum. Those styles are always with me. I don't know if its because i'm left handed that i've always been excited by the possibilities of using my piano hands more evenly. Improvisation in jazz piano has too often tended to focus the 'magic' in the right hand - while the left hand merely functions as a harmonic anchor. Why? Was it perhaps because the piano improvisation got too concerned with emulatiing the melodic lines those cool horn players were doing. We're better than that! - And we have at least 300 years of amazing classical inventions and discoveries to push us. So I love solo piano - the potential is limitless - and happily the work is endless!
